چکیده

The paper presents a method to recover exponential accuracy at all points (including at the discontinuities themselves), from the knowledge of an approximation to the interpolation polynomial (or trigonometrical polynomial). We show that if we are given the collocation point values (or' an highly accurate approximation) at the Gauss or Gauss-Lobatto points, we can reconstruct an uniform exponentially convergent approximation to the function f(x) in any sub-interval of analyticity. The proof covers the cases of Fourier, Chebyshev, Legendre, and more general Gegenbauer collocation methods. 1 Research supported by AFOSR grant 93-0090, ARO grant DAAL03-91-G-0123 and DAAH04-94-G-0205, DARPA grant N00014-91-J-4016, NSF grant DMS-9211820, NASA grant NAGl-l145, and NASA contract NAS1-19480 while the authors were in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001.

Recovering exponential accuracy from collocation point values of smooth functions with end-point singularities

Gibbs phenomenon is the particular manner how a global spectral approximation of a piecewise analytic function behaves at the jump discontinuity. The truncated spectral series has large oscillations near the jump, and the overshoot does not decay as the number of terms in the truncated series increases. There is therefore no convergence in the maximum norm, and convergence in smooth regions awa...

On the Gibbs Phenomenon Iv: Recovering Exponential Accuracy in a Sub-interval from a Gegenbauer Partial Sum of a Piecewise Analytic Function

We continue our investigation of overcoming Gibbs phenomenon, i.e., to obtain exponential accuracy at all points (including at the discontinuities themselves), from the knowledge of a spectral partial sum of a discontinuous but piecewise analytic function. We show that if we are given the rst N Gegenbauer expansion coe cients, based on the Gegenbauer polynomials C k (x) with the weight function...

Filters, mollifiers and the computation of the Gibbs phenomenon

We are concerned here with processing discontinuous functions from their spectral information. We focus on two main aspects of processing such piecewise smooth data: detecting the edges of a piecewise smooth f , namely, the location and amplitudes of its discontinuities; and recovering with high accuracy the underlying function in between those edges. If f is a smooth function, say analytic, th...

Recovering Exponential Accuracy from Non-harmonic Fourier Data Through Spectral Reprojection

Spectral reprojection techniques make possible the recovery of exponential accuracy from the partial Fourier sum of a piecewise-analytic function, essentially conquering the Gibbs phenomenon for this class of functions. This paper extends this result to non-harmonic partial sums, proving that spectral reprojection can reduce the Gibbs phenomenon in nonharmonic reconstruction as well as remove r...

On the Gibbs Phenomenon and Its Resolution

The nonuniform convergence of the Fourier series for discontinuous functions, and in particular the oscillatory behavior of the finite sum, was already analyzed by Wilbraham in 1848. This was later named the Gibbs phenomenon. This article is a review of the Gibbs phenomenon from a different perspective. The Gibbs phenomenon, as we view it, deals with the issue of recovering point values of a fu...
